Chapter 336
Chapter 336:.
While the whole world was celebrating the New Year, Alayna was secluded in a sanatorium with boredom as her companion.
Leaning against the window, she was eating some snacks. Then she went on the Internet, but that did nothing to alleviate her boredom. All she saw were New Year’s wishes from celebrities big and small.
“[Honey, do you like this, I can buy you one].” Came a message from Kevin, along with a picture of a dessert.
Alayna just gave him an impatient look and didn’t even click to enlarge the image. “[I’m not your sweetie. Fuck off].”
Kevin went out grocery shopping early and sent her pictures of everything he saw. That way you’d feel involved, like you were shopping yourself, he told her.
But Alayna just wanted to tell him to fuck off. She didn’t feel involved at all, it just made her feel like Kevin was bragging about his freedom.
To explain her confinement, she rewound time back to a week ago, when she tried to escape from prison for Christmas, but Dr. James caught her. She had longed to get out into the outside world ever since she began her treatment.
She could not leave the sanatorium until she had fully recovered. She had been trying for almost a month to persuade the stubborn psychiatrist to let her out once for Christmas. But the cantankerous old man wouldn’t budge.
Then he saw an internet trending N-City: ‘Businessman makes fairytale proposal’.
He clicked on it when he saw City N. Then he saw all the pictures, the phone in his hand dropped from shock.
“Shit…”.
After picking it up, he stared at the phone for quite a while and made sure he didn’t mistake Hayden for someone else. Then she made a call.
He’d proposed to her best friend, and she had to find out about it online?
That was unfair!
Sulking, she felt mistreated.
“I’m sorry, the number you have dialed is busy…”. The machine’s artificial voice was all she could hear.
Then she realized it was midnight in N City and no one would answer.
The thought of Hayden curled up in a man’s arms, kissing and cuddling, drove her out of her mind. She even felt cheated.
She wanted kisses and hugs, too.
Another text from Kevin interrupted her thoughts. “[Babe, do you like this shirt? What color do you like?”.]noveldrama
“[None. Come back here, I’m sleepy].” She replied.
“[Then get some sleep, you don’t have to wait for me]”].
Stupid! Alayna pulled her shirt down a little and uncovered her shoulder.
Biting her lip, she took a selfie and sent it.
“[Then I’ll go to bed].”
He threw the phone away after sending the message. Humming, she went to the bathroom, ignoring the constant ringing of the phone.
Kevin would be back in half an hour, he bet.
News of Joseph’s proposal was still reverberating all over the Internet, even after a week.
Normally, the PR department would have done something to control it. But the only order for them was: don’t make a big deal out of it.
“Really.” The head of the department asked Magnus again, “It’s been trending for a week. Is that a good thing?”
Magnus shrugged. “Why don’t you ask Mr. Joseph? What he said to me was only three words: don’t listen to him.”
The manager waved his hands hastily.
“If that’s what Mr. Joseph said, he must have a good reason for it.”
“What kind of reason?” Magnus asked curiously.
“Since Mr. Joseph’s proposal, the value of our company’s stock has gone through the roof. The Internet hails Mr. Joseph for his loyalty, our company’s reputation couldn’t be better, Mr. Joseph is really a genius. Even his proposal made our company make a profit.” He told Magnus.
“They say the Public Relations Department is eloquent, but I say you are nothing but a bum. The reasons behind the proposal are not as complicated as you think.”
“Aren’t they? Then why did you buy so many rings, the girls are so jealous about it.”
Magnus looked at the manager and replied, “Because he’s rich.”
Embarrassed, the manager let out a sigh.
Magnus went to Joseph’s office with some files after leaving the PR Department.
“Mr. Joseph.”
“Come in.”
Joseph was reading annual reports from different departments. Work in the company was getting heavy for everyone this time of year. The Finance Department, in particular, had been overloaded with enormous tasks. Joseph was no better off than they were, getting up early and coming home late.
He lifted his head when Magnus walked in.
“How’s the acquisition going?”
Hayden sold his shares to Franklin. But because Franklin was in jail and the contract they signed violated certain laws, the contract was voided.
They had taken care of it. But Hayden learned from a high-ranking Downey Group worker that Sophia intended to sell the company. So he told Joseph about it.
His father had put his life into Downey Group. If it had to be sold, Hayden preferred that Joseph buy it.
“It’s all going smoothly.” Magnus nodded, “But we have to put it on hold until February, as suitable candidates to take over the project are not available now.”
“I see.”
“And I have something you might want to see.” Magnus said grimly, “The surveillance tape from Caesar’s apartment has been restored. It captured some guests living in the apartment during that time.”
Magnus had the screen captures printed out so Joseph could save some time by fast-forwarding the video.
Gloom came over Joseph’s face as he looked at the files.
There was a young man in a black cap. The camera clearly captured his face, which looked familiar to Joseph.
“I thought it might be someone else.” Magnus frowned.
“But I traced a bus ticket to Lanxi City purchased by Benjamin. When you sent me to find Caesar, he’d been living there for a month.”
Joseph raised his head slowly. “Go on.”
“And I also realized he was still there the night before the fire. But no one knows where he had gone after that night.”
